Background & Career History

2008 – Present – Started working for Niall Young Architecture Ltd. In early 2008 part time whilst completing a HND in Architectural Technology at Telford College. I then joined the practice full time in the Summer of 2008.

Experience

I have been involved in numerous projects ranging from new build commercial buildings to bespoke design single dwellings and development sites to small domestic alterations such as adaptations for The City of Edinburgh Council Adaptations department and for Midlothian Council Environmental Health and Social Care.

During several projects with tightly controlled budget and time scale challenges for educational institutions I have led our team to gain statutory permissions, technical design and produce construction information. I have also been part of the design team for review and contract administration. Notable clients for such commercial projects are University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University and Queen Margaret University.

My main duties include liaising with the client throughout the duration of the project and maintaining clear lines of communications with the client, all design team members and contractor to ensure the project goals are achieved. Producing information at all stages from the design brief, discussions with the client, obtaining regulatory consents to producing full product information packages for the contractor. I have experience in communicating with regulatory authorities and obtaining Planning and Listed Building Consents along with Building Warrants. Within the office I organise the CPD programme for staff and review our information management systems to ensure we can offer a resourceful and efficient service.

I enjoy this challenging industry and pride myself on a high standard of personal relations with clients to achieve their project ambitions. I work well with others to help find the best solutions through the project process. Sustainable design and environmental issues are important to me.

Career development

During the last few years I have been advancing my knowledge on important issues such as sustainability and Health and Safety in construction. After completing short courses such as Passive House Fundamentals,  I enrolled on the Association for Environment Conscious building - CarbonLite Retrofit Foundation Course and the Passivhaus Institute PHPP online course. I aim to complete these both in the near future.

I am proficient at using AutoCAD software and now training myself to use Revit. Addition I have been upskilling using  associated software packages such as TwinMotion and GIMP.

I became a Chartered Architectural Technologist, MCIAT, in April 2023.
